Ujjain is widely famous for Mahakaleshwar Temple as it is the home of one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrine of Lord Shiva in India. Mahakaleshwar Temple mystifies a large number of devotees and is also famous for its different type of unique prayers done here, one of which is Ash Ritual or Bhasm Aarti. Darshan timings for Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple are from 4 am to 11 pm so plan accordingly. Although there is free entry for the temple, they also provide VIP passes for devotees who want to take temple’s old route to reach the dwaar where you can offer your religious offerings personally.
You could also visit Harsiddhi Temple. It holds a special significance among many Yogis and Tantra performers. Temple’s grandeur is highlighted by a 15-foot lamp stand, which accommodates hundreds of lamps. During Navratri, these adorned lamps are flamed which creates a glorious spectacle.
Next, you could visit Kalbhairav Temple. It is one of a kind temple where the deity is offered alcohol; hence liquor bottles and other pooja items are available in nearby shops. If time permits, you could also visit other temples such as Shri Chintaman Ganesh Temple, Ram Janardhan Temple, Mangalnath
Temple etc. whose architectural uniqueness and age-old traditions are attached to each of them enhancing Ujjain’s greatness.
Later head back to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 2 : Explore Ram Ghat and Jantar Mantar
Begin your day with early morning breakfast and head out to explore other counterpoints of this timeless city.
Ujjain tour offers you a golden opportunity to experience one of the ancient bathing ghats of India, Ram Ghat. Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings, where mass Hindu devotees gather to bathe in this sacred river. Once in every 12 years, Kumbh Mela is held on the banks of the Kshipra River. If you want to take a dip in this sacred water, remember to bring your bathing suits along with you. Changing booth facilities are available at the Ghats for you.
After taking a dip in the holy water, you could visit the Kaliadeh Palace situated along the banks of the river. It is one of the ancient temples accented by Persian architecture.
Next, proceed to Jantar Mantar. It is also known as Ved Shala Observatory. In ancient time, Ujjain was renowned as the land of learning. When you visit this place you would find state-of-the-art instruments to study astronomy. Guided tours are available if you wish to know more about the instruments available there. You could learn how in ancient times they used to calculate time, the position of stars and planets, the position of the sun and equinoctial days, etc.
If time permits you could also check out local market where you could find many handcrafted goods and also find diverse types of religious artifacts.
Later head back towards your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Day 3 : Omkareshwar and Hanumantiya Tapu
Start your day a little early. Enjoy your breakfast at your hotel and head towards Omkareshwar.
Other than Ujjain Mahakaleshwar, another sacred Jyotirlinga is situated in Omkareshwar. This temple is also among one of the 12 Jyotirlings. Many devotees prefer to visit Omkareshwar after Ujjain Mahakaleshwar as it is within an easy distance of 130 km. from Ujjain. Omkareshwar temple is situated on an island along the banks of River Narmada and you would discover that the island is shaped in the form Om which is a sacred symbol of Hindu religion. To reach the main temple you have to take a short boat ride and while returning back you could also see the confluence (Sangam) of Narmada River from left and Kaveri River from the right. Since both rivers flow from either side of the island they meet here. Sangam is considered to be a sacred spot.
After your short visit to Omkareshwar, head towards Hanumantiya Tapu. You could take a taxi to reach there as the distance between them is 70 km. You would find many activities to have your fill with. Be sure to participate in water sports activities provided there such as Windsurfing, Parasailing, Water Skiing, Jet Skiing, Banana Ride, Water Boat, Cruise Boat and Water Zorbing. If water sports are not your cup of tea then you could take up activities such as Hot Air Ballooning or Para Motoring which would enthrall you with the aerial view of the whole island.
